Hard to believe it’s the last day of September, don’t know where this month has gone it’s been so crazy.  Slowing down a bit (well for 10 days at least) and then Gem and I are on long haul flights all over the place for about two weeks. Nice – especially with me loving flying (not)! If you guys know of any good books to take my mind off it, do let me know. I have “RHONY” to watch of course, but not enough episodes for two weeks of flying all over the place.

I was flicking through this month’s Livingetc, and my eyes were caught by a super cool New York loft. There’s tons to love – a relaxed vibe, perfect high/low mix, exposed brick walls, and a black crocodile-skin effect bathroom (ADORE). Today though I thought I’d focus on just one room, the snug, and drill down into why it works plus how to nab the look!

First things first, the colour palette. Gold and black are a magical combo – it’s glam, sophisticated and super cool. This pad is a slick, industrial apartment in the NoHo district but you could really take this look anywhere – updown, downtown, to the cost, or off to the country. The black and golds are offset with a neutral sofa in a soft, almost lilac grey. I’m always banging on about reigning in the colour palette, and this nails it.

The beautiful hand-blocked bookcase wallpaper and zebra print rug add a dash of pattern and texture to an otherwise quite restrained scheme. Piling on different textures is crucial to creating the perfect layered look, the more the merrier. Clever details like a lacquered ceiling add another element into the mix. It would be magical after dark too, as the gloss-effect would beautifully bounce back the light from the chandelier.

Finally, although there are high-end glam pieces it’s still a space where you could kick back and relax. It’s kept from feeling overly formal by touches of quirk – the zebra rug, the cool chandelier, the brass jax (original vintage Ben Siebel pieces, I suspect). Plus the dark colour palette and trompe l’oeil bookcase makes it feel just as cosy and cocooning as a snug should be. Very cool!
