I adore dining rooms, even as I know they’re going out of fashion. You might not be able to set aside a whole room, but like moi you may have carved out a dining zone in an open plan space, or even just want to create a little nook in the kitchen.
The reason I love them is that dining rooms are a chance to get extra creative and really think outside the box. Unlike more practical spaces like home offices, you’re not really restricted at all – at the most basic all you need in there is a table, chairs, lighting (and perhaps a bar cart or two too!). The rest is all about creating the right atmosphere, so it’s where we really get to flex our decorating and styling muscles. To help get you thinking, here are the favourite dining spaces I’ve spotted this year.
To make the shortlist, the dining rooms had to be cool and stylish (of course), but also cosy and intriguing – the sort of place you could imagine dimming the lamps, lighting some candles and hunkering down for a long evening setting the world to rights with friends and a bottle of wine. I can happily mentally insert myself into that scene in any of these rooms, which is why I find them so inspiring. There’s an abundance of art, colour, pattern and personality in spades – from wallpaper and chandeliers to mismatched chairs, floral and fruit centrepieces, and artfully arranged sheepskins. Snuggle down and enjoy.
